The course will focus the world post 1918 and the lasting impact of World War 1. The course will begin with an overview of imperialism and nationalism. We will be utilizing Cambridge style assessments throughout the course in order to align with IGCSE standards. The primary goal of the course is to provide a student-centered learning environment and engage the student in a comprehensive curriculum with a focus on critical thinking and analysis. The culminating objective is for students to demonstrate a complete picture of world history, Required Supplies: Something to write with (pens, pencils) Something to write on (lined paper) Something to store your work (binder, notebook, folder etc) Box of Tissues (Because you will need them at some point...) Notes to Parents: 1. It is strongly suggested that you make sure your student has access, either at home or through the public library, to the internet, a computer and printer. Students will be submitting work digitally on Schoology. Students may also submit hard copies of work in person. I also accept these via email and make my printer available to students before and after school and before class to print out their assignments. 2. All work for this course will be available on Schoology; students who need extra copies of assignments will be directed to Schoology and only need to see Mr. Barkhau if they need a printed copy. Please make sure your student keeps up with their work as while most of it can be completed in class they will have work assigned to them to complete at home. 3. The course will have many opportunities for students to show mastery of the content. Grading will occur regularly. I personally try to have any assignment a student turns in graded within 3 school days. For more details about my grading policy see additional handout. The year grade will be calculated as such. Y1 = Q1/Q3 (40%) + Q2/Q4 (40%) + Exam (20%) Q1/Q2/Q3/Q4 50% = Test, Essays, Large Projects, etc. 30% = Quizzes, Socratic Circles, Essay Drafts, Quick Writings, etc. 20% = Homework, Classwork, Group work, etc. 90 100 (A), 80 89 (B), 70 79 (C), 60 69 (D), 0 59 (F) Please remember that PowerSchool, not Schoology or another platform has your correct grade. 4. Academic dishonesty in any form is unacceptable. This includes, but is not limited to, copying any kind of work from another student or sharing answers with another student (collusion), plagiarism, or using any form of aid (a.k.a. cheat sheet) on a test or quiz. The testing environment is less than stellar in the classroom and the challenges and temptations are many. Nevertheless, cheating in school has become far too acceptable among many students and needs to be eliminated. Use of an artificial intelligence of any kind to complete assignments is considered academic dishonesty and therefore is cheating. If, for any reason, a student is perceived as cheating, especially during a test, the following actions will be taken: The assignment, quiz or test will be confiscated and will be given a grade of zero. The student(s) will be asked to remain after class and explain their actions. The parents(s) will be contacted to report the incident. 5. Please encourage your student and keep them motivated! This is a pivotal year for them in so many ways they may learn to drive, date, and have new interests. I hate to be dramatic about it, but this is a very pivotal year for them scholastically. They either make the commitment to academics and being a real student (one who studies) or not. Its not easy, but it is essential to their future. 6. World History is about the good, the bad and the ugly. Be prepared to discuss historical concepts and events at home. This will add positively to your students experience in World History and increase their understanding of the relevance of history to current events. Controversial topics will be discussed. 7. Tutoring Times: I am available during ILT hours every day, and afterschool by appointment. 8. AHS Cambridge Proficiency Portfolios Policy: In this course you will produce several assessment artifacts as well as reflections for learning. One or more of these items may be included in your AHS Cambridge Proficiency Portfolio review at the end of the year.
